Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari is a professional poker player whose nickname reflects a genuine earlier career as a professional magician. Born in Tehran, Iran, he moved with his family to San Jose, California, at nine. Before making poker his profession, he waited tables while developing his magic skills.

His friendship with Phil Laak led to a television partnership beyond poker. They appeared together in I Bet You on MOJO HD, competing in unusual wagers and everyday challenges. Writing about the show, Esfandiari emphasized that making it with a close friend was a large part of what made the experience enjoyable.

Esfandiari has also shared his poker knowledge through writing and broadcasting. He authored World Poker Tour: In the Money, a cash-game strategy book published by HarperCollins in 2006. His television work includes joining Lon McEachern and Norman Chad for ESPN’s coverage of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event final table.

One of his most unusual off-table challenges took him into the boxing ring against comedian Kevin Hart. In April 2019, after months of training, Esfandiari won their private three-round match by decision at a Santa Monica gym. Hart publicly congratulated his friend afterward, recognizing the work he had put into preparing for the challenge.

Family life has become a central focus for Esfandiari. A March 2026 interview described beach outings and skiing trips with his wife and three children, along with playful family challenges in which his sons could win a day they got to plan. He also explained that his table talk has changed over time: where he once deliberately tried to extract information from opponents, he now places more emphasis on conversation and enjoying the game.
